On the list of idyllic destinations, the Bahamas should come high, if not top. Although you may think of the Bahamas as half a dozen islands, it’s an archipelago of over 2,000 islands, islets, and cays. If you have any interest in boating you’ll appreciate what an opportunity this represents.
It’s more than just sailing from one island to another. The Bahamas offers the opportunity to explore and discover things that no one else has even found, or at least it will seem that way.
You’ll need to rent a catamaran in the Bahamas with skipper. A catamaran is the best choice as it has a shallow hull, and the water around these islands is very shallow. A skipper will ensure that you make it safely around the islands and don’t end up on a sandbank or underwater reef. Even the local maps struggle to keep up with the changing seabed, making it difficult to navigate with GPS or local maps!
That’s why you need to check out the array of catamarans and arrange your catamaran hire today, with skipper. Our first-class customer service team is waiting to help you.
The great thing about the Bahamas is the variety on offer. There is no right or wrong way to navigate them, although your skipper will probably have a suggestion or two.
A good option, but not the only viable one, is to look at Bimini first. This is a beautiful series of small cays connected by mysterious stone slabs under the water. It is becoming more popular with tourists and this can make it harder to appreciate the islands. But, it’s still worth a look.
Your next stop should be the fourth largest island in the Bahamas, Grand Bahama. Port Lucaya is located here and it's full of specialty stores and eating establishments.
From here you can cruise across the turquoise waters to Andros, this is a huge island but mainly swamp and mangroves. But, it’s also home to lots of deep blue holes, some of which appear to be land-locked but are connected to the sea.
You’ll also find the recently discovered Andros Platform which is huge squared blocks just under the waves, nobody knows how or why they are there, yet.
To the southwest of Andros, you’ll find the Berry Islands, they have very shallow passages between the islets which means you’ll need to proceed with caution. But they do offer a great experience of the natural beauty of the Bahamas. You’ll also find some of the best home-cooked meals in this area of the archipelago.
No trip to the Bahamas is complete without a look at Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. This is a fascinating city blending traditional Caribbean customs with British Colonial influences and some fascinating monuments, such as Fort Fincastle and the Queen’s Staircase.
You should also note that Nassau is separated by its harbor. On the one side is the main city, on the other you’ll find Paradise Island, an area full of fine shops, top-end dining experiences, casinos, and a huge waterpark.
To the southeast of this is Exuma Cays. This set of cays is sparsely inhabited but stunningly beautiful. It’s also home to the Exuma National Park, the first of it’s kind and the opportunity to snorkel with hundreds of different, and very colorful, fish. It’s an experience you’ll want to repeat again and again.
From here you can head back toward Harbour Island, the Dean’s deep blue hole, or east to explore the myriad of other tiny islands dotted through the Bahamas. With the help of a good skipper, you’ll feel like an explorer!
