It’s worth spending some time in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, either before or after you’ve enjoyed your experience on the motorboat, it’s a fascinating town with architecture that stretches back thousands of years, there are plenty of buildings dating from the times of the Romans and of the Moors. But, it’s also very modern with an upbeat, yet laid back vine. You’ll find a host of excellent eateries, shops, museums, and other attractions to keep you amused. They’ll also help you to get a feel for the island.
Once you’ve taken charge of your motorboat it’s a good idea to head south along the coast. This will give you the opportunity to investigate the various sandy coves, many of which are difficult to get to from land. You can also transverse the 11 miles to Cabrera, the entire island is a National Park, it’s an interesting experience discovering somewhere that is large untouched by human hand.
It’s worth noting there are over 200 beaches in a 50km stretch from Palma. You can choose where to stop but you really should include Cala Llamp next to Port d’Andratx. This crescent bay is surrounded by high cliffs and has crystal clear water. It’s a treat although the beach is rocks not sand.
Another worthwhile beach to check out is Cala Mondrago, it’s a double bay and is actually situated in an environmentally protected area, the Mondragoand reserve. The beach is backed by pinewood forests which, in places, nearly touch the water. Fine white sand make this a favorite for families.
Continuing up the east coast will give you access to a multitude of other fine beaches, including the stunning blue caves. As you head towards the north of the island you’ll be able to cruise across the short gap to Menorca. The smaller island also has some impressive beaches and crystal clear waters, as well as friendly locals.
The north coast offers some of the most popular spots with sailors, check out Cala Boquer and Formentor beach. The first is a great snorkeling spot, while the second is the place to eat and drink the night away, admiring the view from the shore.
To complete your navigation of the island you’ll need to drop back down the west coast toward Palma. This is a rocky coastline but there are plenty of secluded coves worth exploring. Just proceed with caution!
