Sailing area: Sardinia, Corsica
On the northwest coast of Sardinia, the lovely town of Alghero is not only a popular departure point for sailors, but a holiday destination in its own right. Its great reputation among tourists is unsurprising: not only is the Old Town center famous for its pleasant atmosphere and charming shops, but Alghero's international airport - served my many low-cost airlines - makes it the easiest destination in Sardinia.
As a starting point for a cruising trip, however, Alghero offers a wide range of possibilities: starting from Capo Caccia and its famous sea cliffs, you can either sail southwards towards the town of Bosa or head north towards Asinara island and Stintino - an itinerary which will take 3 to 4 hours. If possible, do try to avoid the month of August, when too much traffic in the water could distract you from the stunning wilderness of this area.
The gulf's natural protection makes the area perfect for sailing even when the Mistral winds are blowing, but it becomes tricky with winds from the 3rd quadrant. The marina itself is safe and well organized, with all the standard features and services: bathrooms, water, petrol station, boat repair, 24-hour security, and long-term car parking.
Nearby bases: Stintino, Portisco
