Mooring in Salerno & Amalfi

"Today is my last day in this area of Italy and I have to go to Salerno, a beautiful town 60 km southern of Naples. Salerno faces the Amalfi Coast, which is basically the other side of the Sorrento peninsula, and is the ideal departure spot to sail in this area. Amalfi is only 6 Nm far, Positano 14, then you will find Capri (25 Nm), Ischia (40 Nm) and from Ischia sailing to Ventotene and Ponza will take less than a day. But the real advantage of renting a boat in Salerno is the opportunity of sailing towards the Natural Park of Cilento, an untouched area located only 30 Nm south, where there are at least 3 marinas and a number of inlets for staying overnight. The classic itinerary stops in Acciaroli, Palinuro and Marina di Camerota, but there are even more options! In Salerno I caught up with Tonino, an experienced owner of a charter company based in Salerno, who is also dealer for Salona sailboats. 

We had a long chat together and for next season they are planning to enlarge the fleet joining two other companies based here: on the same dock it will be possible to rent different sailboats and there will be only one base more organized and functional. In addition, part of the fleet will be also available in Tropea, in my opinion the ideal base for cruises towards the Aeolian Islands. I visited the dock and it seemed ok to me, although it is located inside the commercial harbor of Salerno and it doesn’t look like the classic touristic marina. Moreover, at the moment, there are some works around as it is going to be entirely renovated to turn it into a modern marina with all facilities for tourists and passengers. On the other hand, the dock is only 2 km far from the train station and is very close to the centre of the town, so you can plan your arrival or departure very easily and just adding a couple of days more to visit the city.

In the afternoon I drove along the Amalfi coast and I found it even better than the Sorrento side (that I visited yesterday). It’s my point of view and half a day is surely not enough to express an opinion… so I’ll wait for yours! On my way back to Naples I stopped in Salerno again to meet Evaristo, who is the owner of the second charter company based here, just to be sure that I knew everyone involved in the business.
